During the recent cold spell I thought a lot about the athletes, just in the last month, who have found themselves in trouble with the law.

Specifically, NFL star Ray Rice indicted on charges of assault and domestic abuse; Adrian Peterson indicted on charges of aggravated assault and reckless injury to a child; and Olympic hero Oscar Pistorius, imprisoned for the death of his girlfriend – to name just three.–Of course all three of these athletes have lost their lucrative s…ponsorship endorsement deals and rightfully so.   Professional athletes are simply too risky these days and that’s exactly why more product endorsements that normally would go to professional athletes are now being endorsed by a long list of actors like:  Rob Lowe (DirecTV), Will Ferrell (Dodge) Mila Kunis (Jim Beam), Samuel L. Jackson (Capital One) and Mathew McConaughey (Lincoln).   Sure, LeBron James and Peyton Manning will continue to receive multimillion-dollar, multiyear deals as will Michael Jordan, Derek Jeter and David Beckham.  But those are the only ones I can think of that I’d take a chance on.  After all, as we learned from Tiger Woods, you’re only one scandal away from major repositioning.  If you’re from the same generation as mine, you will understand what I mean when I say, “We’ve come a long ways from the days of Broadway Joe Namath endorsing Hanes Panty Hose!”
